Frequently asked questions

Which invisible characters does it find?
Zero-width spaces (U+200B), joiners and non-joiners, word joiners, byte order marks (U+FEFF), soft hyphens, no-break and narrow no-break spaces, direction marks and overrides, tag characters (U+E0000 to U+E007F), runs of variation selectors and blank fillers like U+3164. Open What changed to see each one tagged where it sits, with its name and code.
Why do invisible characters cause problems?
A word with a zero-width space inside no longer matches the same word without one, so searches, spreadsheet formulas and spell check miss it. No-break spaces and byte order marks break code and config files that expect plain spaces, and stray direction marks can flip the order of text. Tag characters can even hide instructions that people cannot see but AI models read; if your text carries one, the tool shows you what it said and removes it. Joiners inside emoji and in Persian, Arabic and Indic scripts are kept. More in how to remove hidden characters from ChatGPT text.
Is my text uploaded or saved?
No. Cleaning runs in your browser as you type, so your text never reaches Write It and is not stored. It is free, with no sign-up and no limit, and keeps working offline once the page has loaded. Like most websites, the page loads analytics that can see a visit, not what you typed.
