Frequently asked questions
What does ChatGPT leave in copied text?
Up to five things, and this page clears all of them: narrow no-break spaces (U+202F) and other hidden characters; citation markers like :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}, citeturn0search3 and 【4†source】; ?utm_source=chatgpt.com on links; markdown asterisks and ## headings; and em dashes and curly quotes. To keep bold and headings as real formatting, use Copy for Google Docs. See what :contentReference[oaicite] means.
Does ChatGPT watermark its text?
In the EU, yes. On October 5, 2026, OpenAI announced a watermark for ChatGPT and Codex text there, rolling out over the following weeks, plus an opt-in version for API developers anywhere. It is a pattern in word choice, not a character, so no cleaner takes it out; changing the wording is what weakens it. The U+202F spaces found in 2025 answers are a different thing: OpenAI called them a quirk of training, not a watermark. More in Claude and ChatGPT now watermark their text.
Is my text uploaded or saved?
No. Cleaning runs in your browser as you type, so your text never reaches Write It and is not stored. It is free, with no sign-up and no limit, and keeps working offline once the page has loaded. Like most websites, the page loads analytics that can see a visit, not what you typed.
