Comparison

Write It vs Perplexity

Perplexity is a very good way to understand a topic fast. It is not a place to write, cite, and submit a paper.

These barely overlap, which is why the comparison is useful — a lot of students use Perplexity for research and then have no plan for the eight hours after the research.

What Perplexity is good at

Ask a real question and get a synthesized answer with inline links. For the early stage of a research paper — working out what the debate actually is, who the significant voices are, what terms you need to know — that is genuinely faster than working through a page of search results.

Its best use for a student is as a map. Read the answer, then follow the links to the actual sources and read those.

Then the paper still has to exist

Once you know your argument, the remaining work is writing it, supporting each claim, formatting the references, and getting it into the document. Perplexity does not do any of that.

  • Research Mode holds your approved sources in a library tied to that specific paper and generates a Works Cited in MLA 9, APA 7, Chicago, or IEEE.
  • Apollo Agent Mode drafts section by section inside the doc, holding to your tone and your rubric.
  • The auto typer puts text into the document the way typing does, with variable speed and corrections.
  • The humanizer and detector clean up machine-sounding prose and show you what still reads that way.

Install Write It and go from sources to a cited draft without leaving your Google Doc.

Use them at different stages

Pick Write It when

  • You are past understanding the topic and need the paper written, cited, and submitted.
  • You need a bibliography formatted to a specific style and inserted into the document.
  • The revision history of the Google Doc matters.

Pick Perplexity when

  • You are early and still trying to understand the topic well enough to have a thesis.
  • You want an answer with sources attached so you can chase the primary material.

Bottom line: Perplexity is one of the better ways to get up to speed on a topic and find your way to real sources. It is not where a paper gets written — there is no citation formatting, no document integration, and no way to get the output into Docs except pasting. The natural split is Perplexity for orientation, Write It for producing the thing you turn in.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cite Perplexity in my paper?
You should cite the underlying sources it links to, not the answer itself. Open the source, confirm it supports the claim, and cite that. Most rubrics treat an AI answer as a starting point, not a reference.
Does Write It search the web for sources?
Yes. Research Mode searches against your topic with your citation style and course lens applied, and surfaces candidates you open and judge yourself before keeping them.
How much does Write It cost?
Write It is free to start with 5,000 tokens at signup. Plus is $10 a month or $96 a year and includes 100,000 tokens a month. Premium is $15 a month or $144 a year and includes 200,000 tokens a month. Unused tokens roll over on both paid plans.
Does Write It work outside Google Docs?
Write It runs in Google Docs with the full toolkit, in Microsoft Word on the web, and in Google Slides with a lighter feature set.
