How do you describe a part-time job in Common App activities?
Write a clear activity entry for retail, food service, tutoring, or other paid work. Explain responsibilities and growth without inventing corporate language.

Use your real job title, identify the employer or work setting, and describe the duties or added responsibility that best explain your contribution. Paid work belongs in an activities inventory. You do not need to rename everyday tasks with elaborate business language.
Choose the work that explains your responsibility
Write a full inventory before shortening: serving customers, preparing orders, maintaining equipment, opening or closing, training coworkers, managing bookings, or handling a specific recurring task. Then choose the details that show what someone relied on you to do.
Avoid listing every basic duty when the role name already supplies context. If the position says cashier, use the description to add something beyond “worked the register.” At the same time, ordinary duties are legitimate details; you do not need to invent a leadership project to justify the job.
Use a plain-language example
Original fictional example under 150 characters: “Handled checkout and produce restocking; trained two new weekend cashiers on the closing checklist.”
This description has an action, a work area, and a specific added responsibility. Use the number only if it is true. “Optimized customer-facing operations” would be less informative because it hides the actual work behind broad language.
Represent changes in responsibility
If your role developed, describe the change without exaggerating its scope. You might have moved from setup to leading a particular closing task, or begun training new staff while keeping the same title. A promotion is useful context when real; growth can also occur without a formal title change.
- Use the title your employer would recognize.
- Separate your contribution from the business’s overall results.
- Include a measurable result only when you can support it.
- Describe self-employment or informal paid work accurately rather than inventing a company.
Check hours and the reason for including context
Use your actual schedule, with an honest estimate when shifts varied. Distinguish school-term work from summer work before calculating the average. If you held overlapping jobs, make sure the total time remains consistent with the calendar.
You can mention that the income supported your household if that context matters and you want to share it. You do not need to disclose a family budget. The entry can stand on the responsibility itself.
Finally, compare the description with any essay about the job. Let the activity entry summarize the work while the essay explains a particular decision or perspective. Repeating the same duties at length in both places uses space without adding understanding.
