How to lower a Turnitin similarity score by fixing the writing
Start with the matched passages, not a target percentage. A checklist for quotations, paraphrases, references, and matches to your own earlier work.

To reduce problematic similarity, inspect each match and fix the source use: quote exact wording, cite borrowed ideas, replace close paraphrases with your own explanation, and remove unnecessary copied material. Some legitimate matches should remain. The goal is an accurately attributed paper, not the smallest possible percentage.
There is no universal good percentage
Turnitin’s official explanation of similarity scores says the report identifies matching text rather than deciding plagiarism. It does not set a single acceptable score. Correct quotations, references, and common phrases can match. Read your assignment’s instructions and the instructor’s interpretation before deciding what needs revision.
A short paper with a required quoted passage can have a different pattern from a long paper built mostly around original analysis. One large unexplained match may deserve more attention than many small matches to ordinary phrases. The headline percentage cannot make that distinction for you.
Sort the matches before rewriting anything
| Matched material | What to check | Useful action |
|---|---|---|
| Exact quotation | Is it exact, clearly marked, cited, and necessary? | Keep or shorten it according to the assignment. |
| Close paraphrase | Does it copy the source’s sentence structure or distinctive wording? | Re-explain the idea from understanding and retain the citation. |
| Reference entry | Does the entry accurately describe the source? | Correct errors; do not remove a needed reference to chase a score. |
| Your previous submission | Is reuse permitted, and is this a resubmission of the same work? | Ask the instructor to review the match in context. |
| Assignment template | Was this text supplied or required by the instructor? | Identify it when discussing the report. |
Fix a close paraphrase in three passes
Read the source until you can explain the relevant idea without looking at its sentence. Set it aside and write the explanation for the purpose of your own paragraph. Then reopen the source to check accuracy and add the citation. If a distinctive phrase must stay exactly as written, mark it as a quotation under the required style.
Here is an original fictional example. Suppose a source sentence says, “The reading room closed at six, limiting evening access for commuters.” Merely changing it to “The study room shut at six, restricting nighttime access for commuters” keeps almost the whole structure. A different explanation could be: “Students arriving after work could not use the reading room because its opening hours ended before their visit.” That explanation still needs a citation to the actual source.
A paraphrase is not a contest to replace every noun with a synonym. Preserve necessary technical terms. Add your own analysis of why the point matters instead of disguising the same source sentence. Never attach the fictional example above to a real author or invented publication.
Check quotation and reference settings with the instructor
Do not edit a valid bibliography out of the submitted document simply because it contributes matches. If a report includes quotations, reference entries, or supplied template language, ask how the instructor wants those matches interpreted. You may not have the same report controls or exclusion permissions as the instructor.
Likewise, do not assume that submitting again will immediately produce a particular score. Resubmission access and processing depend on the assignment and product setup. Keep a copy of the revised file, verify what was actually submitted, and ask about the permitted correction process when the deadline has passed.
Use the next revision pass to improve the argument
- Keep quotations that do work your paraphrase cannot do.
- Explain each important piece of evidence in your own reasoning.
- Check that every borrowed idea has the required attribution.
- Match every in-text citation to the correct reference entry.
- Inspect the new report’s passages if a revised report is available.
An AI percentage is a separate report, so the steps here are not a formula for changing that number. Read the AI detector explanation if that is the concern you were given.
