What should you do if you have no awards for the Common App honors section?
Review genuine recognitions and keep honors distinct from activities. Learn how to handle an empty honors list without inventing awards or exaggerating scope.

Review your real recognitions, follow the current field instructions, and leave out anything that was not an honor you actually received. You do not need to invent awards to fill space. Use the rest of the application to describe your work, interests, and responsibilities accurately.
Check records before assuming there is nothing to list
Look at school notices, report cards, competition results, and messages from teachers or counselors. You may have forgotten a school recognition or subject award. Confirm the exact name, when you received it, and what it recognized before entering it.
Read the current honors field carefully. A completion certificate, membership, participation record, and competitive award are not interchangeable. If you are unsure how a school recognition should be classified, ask your counselor rather than giving it a more impressive label.
Keep honors and activities distinct
| Record | Check before listing |
|---|---|
| Award or distinction | Was it actually awarded to you, and what did it recognize? |
| Program completion | Was this an honor or simply evidence that you attended? |
| Club membership | Does it belong in activities rather than as an award? |
| Team result | Were you a recipient, and how should the shared result be described? |
These distinctions are an accuracy check, not a ranking of experiences. A meaningful activity does not become less worthwhile because it was not an award. Put the information in the place where it is most clearly understood.
Describe scope without stretching it
If a recognition came from your school, do not call it national because the organization has a national name. If you were a finalist, do not describe yourself as the winner. Use the awarding body’s actual terminology and the current application’s definitions for reporting levels.
Fictional example: a student receives a department recognition for a class project. The accurate entry names that recognition and the school context. Recasting it as an international research award would misrepresent both the process and the achievement.
Move on when the list is accurate
An empty or short section can feel uncomfortable, but padding it does not solve the problem. Spend the remaining time on clear activity descriptions, accurate records, and essays that reveal your perspective. Avoid last-minute pay-to-receive certificates presented as competitive honors.
If your school offers few formal recognitions, a counselor may be able to explain the school context through their normal materials. Do not write an apology for lacking prizes. Describe your actual opportunities and work without assuming that another applicant’s award list defines what yours must look like.
