How do you ask a teacher for a college recommendation letter?
Ask for a recommendation with a clear deadline, relevant class context, and room for an honest answer. Includes an adaptable email and follow-up checklist.
Write It teamUpdated 2 min read
Ask whether the teacher is willing and able to write a supportive recommendation by your earliest required deadline. Remind them of the class and work they know, then offer useful materials. Ask before sending an application-system invitation, and follow your school’s recommendation process.
Choose someone who can describe your work
Check each college’s requirements for recommender type and subject. Then consider who has seen you think, respond to feedback, contribute to class, or improve. The teacher who awarded your highest grade is not automatically the person with the most specific evidence.
Ask early enough for a genuine choice whenever possible. If the deadline is close, acknowledge the short notice directly. Do not hide the date in an attachment or assume that a teacher’s agreement to help one student means they have unlimited capacity.
Use a concise request
Adaptable email example: Subject: College recommendation request — first deadline [date] Hello [teacher name], I was in your [course and term] class, where I worked on [specific project or experience]. Would you be willing and able to write a supportive college recommendation for me? My earliest required deadline is [date]. I can share a short summary of my work, college list, and submission instructions. I understand if your schedule does not allow it. Thank you for considering the request. [Your name]
Replace every bracket with accurate information. The class detail should help the teacher remember your work, not tell them what praise to write. If you ask in person, send a short follow-up with the agreed deadline and materials.
Confirm the process after they agree
- Check whether your school uses Common App directly or another counseling platform.
- Confirm the teacher’s preferred email and requested materials.
- Record the earliest relevant deadline and any school lead-time requirement.
- Complete the invitation and assignment steps the application requires.
Common App distinguishes inviting a recommender from assigning one to a college. Follow the instructions in your account and your school’s process; sending a request email alone does not complete the application’s administrative steps.
Follow up with useful information
If you have not received a reply, send one polite reminder after a reasonable interval, taking the deadline and school schedule into account. If the teacher declines, thank them and ask another eligible recommender. Do not pressure them to write a letter they cannot support or complete.
Once a teacher agrees, provide a compact factual packet and keep deadline changes clear. A thank-you after submission is appropriate. You do not need to ask to inspect the letter or supply a draft written as if you were the teacher.
